Oil sketch on panel, painted in about an hour. An "alla prima" study, also known as "premier coup" meaning painted in one session or attempt, wet paint into wet paint. Beginning on a well-prepared gesso panel, the sketch is quickly executed and not revisited once the paint is dry. It's a little like drawing with the paintbrush, getting the washes of color in boldly with large brushes, and suggesting rather than rendering details. The brushwork is left loose which lends drama and movement to the spontaneous oil study.
