Pastel portrait done in an afternoon sitting. Painted on Canson Mi-Teintes paper, with Rembrandt pastels, in good natural light from a window.
I have lost touch with the sitter, who was completing her obstetrics studies, and getting ready to begin her practice. I was a full nine months pregnant, and I remember telling her that I could have my baby now that my last scheduled portrait was done! Three days later, a Wednesday, Matthew was born! This was winter 1985.
I took a slide photo of it before she left, and though it was underexposed and some color and values are lost, this painting remains one of my favorites ever. She had incredible green eyes, and the strong chiaroscuro brought out their dramatic intensity
